Windows Vista lets you control what data format gets sent to your soundcard so you can get rid of the resampling step without bypassing the mixer by setting mixer's output sample rate matching the sample rate of what you play (44100Hz for CD-sourced material). The problem with ASIO is that it's more likely to have buggy drivers than plain WDM drivers. So why claim no difference is made if there is? I went back and forth from Direct Sound (no wasapi on XP) to the ASIO output and there is indeed better separation of the channels. So why is it when I set this up on my big speaker setup, I had to move my listening position back as the sweetspot had noticeably changed.
